Pre-Journey Reflection

The first of many different modes of transportation will occur this upcoming Sunday. The Sabbath will be a full day of travel as I fly from San Jose to Philadelphia with a layover in Phoenix. That Monday will be our little pre-departure orientation and the next morning we are taking a shuttle bus to New York. On January 13 we volunteers will be aboard a non-stop flight from John F. Kennedy Airport (Appropriate departing location for all Peace Corps volunteers) in New York City to Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. From there we take a bus to Rabat, the nation's capital, for four days. After that we are split between Azrou and Meknes for training. We will be in culture and language training until we are sworn in on April 1 (hopefully that isn't a joke) and sent to our site placements.

It is truly great news to have a game-plan for what will be going on after next Sunday. I am blessed to have made two friends from Meknes and so I will ask for that placement during my site interview. They work with USAID and train Moroccan youth to become political activists so their work is something I would love to be able to support in any way I can. Meknes also has a Catholic parish that I would like to join because service is supposed to be incredibly challenging for volunteers and I know that celebration of the Eucharist is something I want to participate in as much as I can (at least once a week).

I have not started packing yet, but think I may give it a go later today. I do not feel nervous and am excited for the trip ahead!

A very dry reflection indeed, but I feel very cool and collected at the moment. Perhaps a surge of emotion will arise from within as we volunteers undergo this great voyage!
